Abstract

Gobernador Bories was the first factory ship to process whales under the Chilean flag in Antarctic waters. Built in England in 1882, she was converted as factory ship in Norway in 1906 for the Sociedad Ballenera de Magallanes. Between 1906 and 1914, she undertook eight expeditions to the South Shetlands, operating during the summer season mainly in Whalers Bay, Deception Island. Another of her functions was the transport of the oil produced to Europe, which was carried out during the winter of each year. In 1914 she was sunk by the Royal Navy at Scapa Flow for use as a blockade ship in World War I. In this article, considering the fragmentary and dispersed nature of the information available in newspapers from United Kingdom, Netherlands, Germany, Norway and Chile, we reconstruct the biography of the ship, especially the services provided to the Sociedad Ballenera de Magallanes.
