Abstract

The Magallanes province has now become a destination for the international migrant population. The objective of this article is to discuss the characteristics of this new migration, especially in the city of Punta Arenas, under the light of the migration processes that Chile experiences in recent years, with special focus on revealing the character of the migratory trajectories present in the region. In order to do this, four dimensions of the immigrant population are addressed: i) demographic characteristics; ii) relations of migratory flows with their places of origin; iii) spatialization in the city and iv) coexistence with the non-migrant population. The empirical information is based on the results of the project “Characterization of the recent foreign migration in the province of Magallanes”, a study carried out in the city of Punta Arenas and requested by the Government of Magallanes. The methodology used in the study was the realization of a population survey, through the analysis of secondary sources and the implementation of a survey aimed at the recent immigrant population of foreign origin.
